Being dead wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

Most likely. Far from him to be the representative of all deceased folk, but being dead was honestly pretty fun. To be more accurate, being a ghost

As long as he distracted himself from the fact that he’d left behind his friends, and he didn’t know where they were anymore—being a ghost didn’t mean automatic GPS—being a ghost was more or less carefree.

Speaking of being distracted, that was a necessity right about now.

He walked down the steps of the house he’d been occupying—empty for as long as he’d been there, and before as well; so that ruled out the possibility of his existence being common knowledge—to the wooden sign, almost toppling over into the grass from the carelessness of whoever nailed it down, staring at the red painted SOLD.

Who’d bought a house that’d been left alone for so long, possibly even years? To his knowledge the metropolitan parts of the world had only been expanding further on their apartment buildings, each more stylish than the next.

Perhaps they didn’t know the full set of details about the house, he thought. Or they preferred the rare peacefulness this place had, instead of the frantic noises of the city that never quite left any time, any day. There were dozens of reasons for the person deciding to occupy this house, but he wasn’t moving anytime soon.

Living in the city was stressful.

It was so fast-paced, there; there was always something to be done. Food needed to be bought, and the closeness of the store ensured that he would leave it until the last minute. His new neighbors were noisy, keeping him up even at his late sleep schedule. Mostly, there were bills to pay, always bills to pay, and even with his comfortable income, he always felt ready to snap.

House-hunting proved to be a simple prospect, because he fell in love with the third house he walked into. It had been unoccupied for a long time, but that only added to its charm. He looked into the living room and saw right where his piano could sit, against the wall next to the window. The view of the woods behind the house would surely inspire compositions that he couldn’t wring from the tired old music room in his apartment.

And so it was optimistically that he followed the moving van to the place, telling the furniture movers where this and that should go. At the end of the long day, there were still boxes to be unpacked, but he gave himself the night off, curled up on the couch. He couldn’t wait to call Miku, bring her here to see what she thought. Unfortunately, a tour would keep her away for quite awhile.

The house was quiet. The TV wasn’t hooked up yet; a tired Kaito decided that was a job for another day. He was trying to read, but somehow he kept getting distracted. It wasn’t that he could hear someone moving through the house, not exactly, but … He didn’t feel alone, that was certain.

     ❄~ “… Hello?”

It felt ridiculous, calling out into open air. His eyes darted around the darkened room, lit only by the glow of the lamp next to him. The old piano, with its comforting weight and familiarity, stood obscured in shadows. The boxes surrounding him suddenly seemed to be hiding any number of secrets. Maybe there was an animal lurking around? It would explain the vibe that he got, which was now almost overpowering.
