Plausible, but is it self-sufficient by its own? Were there more jobs sprouting underneath Crypton’s foundations or were there just a higher need of employment to go around the business? If that were the case, why cannot Crypton manufacture their employees? Why not create an entire slave of android-based employees to smooth out production? With the kind of income they received from their customers (and there were many glorified music producers whose names fall under their registers) then why not do it? There would be no need to hire lethargic humanoids who easily come to tire; the exchange of Vocaloid staff members would be a long lasting benefit.

But then that would be wrong. Inhuman, even. Isn’t that right? Crypton was not like that— Japan was not like that. Len had every reason to believe better of this source of humanity society has maintained over the generations.

“No, I don’t think that’s it at all,” he replies under a softer tone.

A smile seems to stretch across his lips as he speaks.

“Maybe it’s because more producers are being born into the world, I mean producers for Vocaloid. Maybe they’re depending more on us to make their sounds come true.”

Len laughs, calm eyes narrowing on shapeless clouds above their heads.

“Maybe people are starting to warm up a bit more to Vocaloid, yeah?”

A long stretch of hope, but enough to leave his fire kindle to a gentle flame. It is nothing more but a child’s wishes to have an odd voice be heard and accepted like all others.

The softer register is unexpected. There is hope in the other’s tone, cheer in the gentle laugh. Emotion, in short. A want for recognition in a world that looks upon him with confusion. Does the android recognize that the one standing next to him is still doubtful of his very ability to feel? Although, with each word spoken in a slightly robotic tone, Kaito’s own doubts on the other diminish. You can’t fake the gentle gleam in faraway eyes as they gaze at the clouds above, can’t manufacture wishes and beliefs. Such things can only be developed through living, through experiences that shape a worldview in an intelligent mind that reacts to stimulus around it.

Somehow, somehow, the man-made heart holds desire.

And will Kaito be one to deem that desire impossible? To claim that the world will never be ready for synthetic minds and mechanical emotions? No, he could never be so cruel. One can wonder whether androids dream of electric sleep, but one cannot deny the fact that they do dream when faced with concrete evidence. So it is with a gentle smile that the human replies to the synthesizer.

❄~ “You know, I could believe that.”

Tones are kind, the voice of an elder brother appeasing a younger as he drifts into sweet dreams. Yes, all will be accepted one day. Vocaloid is becoming a household name. Such musing easily turns to the very company that birthed the shorter male next to him, the same company that approached him as he wore mourning clothes and offered him the chance of a lifetime. That day was only a few years ago, and yet it seems light-years away from this moment.

❄~ “The company has come far, hasn’t it? The advances are amazing, when you think about it.”

Amazing that a single company could be responsible for so much. The company that started out as a humble recording contracter became so much more, creating the first sound from the future and turning such a concept from a marketing ploy to a reality. Now, it’s making innovations in all sorts of ways, and there are copious copies of not only the most famed singer, but Kaito himself. It’s surreal, honestly. He can’t really wrap his head around it.
